Amazon Australia has finally launched... and it's frankly underwhelming

Speculation has been rife through the year as to when Amazon would open shop Down Under – with a soft launch notification sent to sellers just before Black Friday sending everyone into a tizzy to prepare themselves for great bargains during the big sales event – Amazon has finally launched its online marketplace in Australia.

Just after midnight today (December 5) Amazon opened its digital doors to Aussies, expanding on its range of e-readers and ebooks to include laptops, cameras, phone accessories and plenty more, all ready to be bought right now.

At present, there are 23 categories listed on Amazon Australia’s site, and ABC News reports there's more to come in the near future (we hope).

Although the catalogue at the moment seems limited, Amazon Australia’s county manager, Rocco Braeuniger, has said that “millions” of products from Aussie retailers will be sold on the digital platform, with a long-term commitment being made to the Australian economy.

“Over time, we will create thousands of new jobs and invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Australia,” he said.

Delivered to the door

Amazon’s delivery speeds is one of the main selling points for the company’s popularity in other markets. The retail giant is bringing its promise of next-day delivery to Australia as well with Priority Delivery, and free delivery is available for products worth over $49.

There is, however, no news on whether or not Amazon Fresh will be delivering Aussies their groceries any time soon.

Top Christmas toys and techy playthings for kids of all ages

There comes a time when you realise you’d quite like socks for Christmas. That pants are a thoroughly useful and considerate present, particularly if they have the Cookie Monster printed on them.

That’s right, we all get old.

However, the kids don’t want socks. Guaranteed. And if you look deep inside there’s still a part of you that wants to be playing with Lego at 4pm, not watching Christmas themed soaps or shows where celebrities dance/sing/eat insects.

Here are 2017’s top Christmas present toys and techy playthings for the kids. And adults with enough kid left in them to want to avoid talking about mortgages and Trump over the Christmas turkey. Get involved.

We remember the days when Sphero was just a weird ball you could control with your iPhone. Simpler days.

Now you can get all sorts of Star Wars goodies from this clever radio controlled upstart company. Last year we had the BB-8 droid, but for Christmas 2017 we’re going old-school with the Sphero R2-D2. It looks and sounds just like the droid from the classic Star Wars movies.

You control the little guy using a phone app, and even his head swivels for that legit R2-D2 feel. But, no, you can’t project holograms. We may have iPhones, but we don’t have all of Star Wars’ tech just yet.

Sony probably wouldn’t like us calling PlayStation VR a toy, but in the techy plaything stakes few things will nip a Christmas break lull in the bud like this virtual reality headset. Caveat: you will need a PS4 too.

For the uninitiated, PSVR (just about) covers your entire field of view, transporting you to 3D game worlds just like you imagined as a kid. It’s an intense experience so you may want to start off with something quick and easy like PlayStation VR Worlds: the deep-diving ocean trip is one of our faves.

However, there are full games available with VR now too, including Gran Turismo Sport, Skyrim VR and, for the bold, survival horror smash Resident Evil 7.

The Anki Cozmo was available last Christmas in the US, but it has now gone global. And it’s undoubtedly one of this year’s hottest techy toys.

Cozmo looks like a remote control loader. However, AI smarts make it more a home robot than a remote control toy.

A camera lets it see and it can recognise a series of included blocks, as well as edges of surfaces and other objects – including faces. Fresh out of the box it’s packed full of personality, a screen giving it animated eyes, and the speaker lets Cozmo “speak” to you with droid-like noises. It’s way cuter than you could ever grasp from just a picture.

Cozmo Code Lab is what will keep this toy going long after Christmas day, though, as it lets you program Cozmo to do all sorts of things. And its capabilities are only growing.

Mini drones are like fidget spinners. Start looking for a cheap one and within minutes you’ll be knee-deep in options from companies you’ve never heard of that we’re not sure we’d recommend putting in your kids’ hands. Watch those fingers.

The Kaiser Baas Theta Mini drone is a solid mini drone pick you can actually find in major retailers other than Amazon. And it has blade guards to avoid your mischievous 5-year old trying to cut your hair with the thing.

It also uses a controller pad that looks a lot like an Xbox’s. Extra features include a 720p camera that records to 32GB internal storage and aerial acrobatics the Theta Mini can perform with the press of a button.

Anki is fast becoming one of the best makers of tech-infused toys. To get your head around Overdrive, think of it as a cross between Scalextric and a racing video game.

There’s a real track you build in your living room, and real mini cars race along it, but you control them using a phone or tablet rather than an RC controller. The app lets you control the speed and the “lane” your racer is in, but the real fun comes with weapons.

These let you disable other racers, just like Mario Kart or Wipeout. No charred carpet is needed, though, as the cars communicate with each other, rather than literally blowing each other up. They are like mini computers, and have IR cameras. Anki Overdrive is smarter than it looks.

New for this year, you can get a Fast and Furious themed starter set, which includes two cars from the films.

Kids spending too much time on the iPad? Osmo is one of the best ways to make sure their eyes aren’t glued to the thing even when they are using it.

Osmo uses a camera that slots onto the top of your tablet, letting it see a “play surface” in front of the slab. Different Oslo packages then let the kids play with play pieces, word counters and “coding” blocks that correspond to apps on the tablet. It lets educational games break out into the real world.

It’s neat idea. Oslo Masterpiece also helps teach your child how to draw, testing their hand-eye coordination by getting them to trace an image displayed on the tablet screen.

If, like us, you remember Meccano as “Lego that’s too difficult”, Max may fill you with fear. However, it’s a great way to give your child a context for learning about programming.

Meccano Max is a robot you build and then program, using a phone app. Like any Meccano kit, just building Max will suck up a good few hours. It has an IR camera, a tilting head, moving wheel as a hand that can grab things. All of these can be programmed. A phone slots into the little guy’s head to act as its eyes and ears.

If the idea of STEM robotics programming is a bit too much for your child (or you), Max also offers games and customisable faces, displayed and animated on the phone screen.

If you bought a Raspberry Pi with the aim of learning to code, there’s a good chance it’s now getting dusty and rusty in a corner somewhere. However, the Kano Computer Kit’s aim is to ease younger folk into the programming process, so the learning curve doesn’t seem like a 100ft wall.

It’s comprised of a Raspberry Pi, a funky orange keyboard, a case, LED light kit and all the other little accessories needed to get a Pi up and running. Kano also offers a package with a screen and speaker, if you don’t have a monitor or TV to use.

The real hit part of the Kano setup is the “storybook” manual and software, though. If you’re on a tight budget this Christmas, you can actually download the Kano OS software for free, letting you snag a solo Raspberry Pi 3 for much less cash.

How to get the best Wi-Fi coverage this Christmas

Christmas is all about the latest technology trends, and this year most wish lists will be topped with big ticket items like the Sony PS4 Pro, XBox One X or the latest smart TV.

So whether you’re playing new releases or streaming your favourite festive films, you need a strong Internet connection that has the capacity to manage these devices all at once.

If you’re struggling to achieve complete coverage throughout your home with your router alone, then you could be saying ‘bah humbug’ on the big day.

Introducing devolo's ‘whole home’ Wi-Fi solution

Wi-Fi can be unreliable for various reasons, from the placement of your router to the thickness of your walls. Luckily, devolo has got the perfect solution to bring Christmas cheer and resolve the issue of poor Wi-Fi coverage.

Devolo’s dLAN 1200+ WiFi Powerline adapter is the ultimate 'whole home' Wi-Fi fix.

Using your electrical circuit to provide new hotspots around the home with connection speeds of up to 1200Mbps, it works by connecting one of the adapters to your router and placing another adapter into a socket in a room with poor Wi-Fi signal.

The Wi-Fi signal is then passed through your electrical circuit to the adapter – the signal isn’t 'stretched' so your connection maintains strength.

All adapters are fitted with their own pass-through socket so you don’t have to worry about losing an outlet and it won’t affect your signal.

The great thing about the devolo Powerline adapter is that it allows you to use multiple adapters across your home, so you can extend your signal all the way to the attic, basement or even the 'get away from it all' shed.

Devolo’s GigaGate WiFi Bridge can also extend your Wi-Fi, so if your living room has a strong connection but your upstairs office is lacking coverage, you can connect the GigaGate WiFi Bridge to carry your router's signal.

The connection is lightning-fast and up to 2Gbps, achieved simply by plugging the base unit into your router and placing the satellite unit where the connection is needed, whether that's for TVs or games consoles that need an extra boost.

The GigaGate WiFi Bridge is a powering piece of kit, but it’s also one that can be extended thanks to the devolo GigaGate Satellite units. The main unit uses 4 x 4 Quantenna Technology that enables it to provide effective wireless connections.

Up to eight satellite units can be connected to expand your home network. They all have four Ethernet ports, a fifth high-speed Gigabit LAN port for extra connectivity options and each Satellite is a strong Wi-Fi access point.

With devolo’s dLAN 1200+ WiFi and GigaGate, getting great connectivity in time for Christmas is simple.

10 gadget stocking stuffers gifts that are under $100

Gifts come in all shapes and sizes, and some of the best tech presents for 2017 conveniently fit into a stocking, or at least costs less than $100. Good things come in small, inexpensive packages, too.

Sure, big gifts are always exciting, but they’re also expensive and usually not what you can offer a friend, coworker, or relative who is not in your immediate family. That’s a real dilemma.

That why we have outlined 10 of the most exciting stocking stuffers you may have overlooked, but are scrambling to find before the holidays.

Here are the best gift ideas for under $100.

The Amazon Echo Dot ties your emerging smart home together better than red ribbon ties together presents. This mini Alexa speaker is just $29.99 right now on Amazon, and it has the smarts to play music, control lights and answer questions. It’s the smart, affordable gift that that just right for so many people on your shopping list this year.

The Fitbit Charge HR is still going strong in 2017 and it’s mainly because of the price: this is one of the few top-performing activity trackers for under $100. It goes beyond basic step counting and traditional calories burned metrics thanks to the heart rate monitor, as the HR name suggests. It also analyzes sleep and sets a silent alarm that vibrates for a peaceful wake up.

Finding the Tile Mate & Slim Combo Pack in your stocking means a new year of finding precious items you always lose all of the time. Keys, wallets, purses and backpack benefit the most from this tiny Bluetooth tracker. It can attach to a key chain, slip into a bag or stick to the back of an iPad or TV remote. This four-pack gives you your best value at $69.99.

Soft drinks are expensive and unhealthy, so a good alternative for a 2018 New Year’s resolution is the SodaStream Genesis Home Sparkling Water Soda Maker. At just $49.99, this gift conveniently puts the creation of carbonated drinks in your hands. Just choose your level of carbonation and flavor and you can go from tap water to sparkling water instantly. Your hardest decision will be choosing whether the black or silver design blends in your kitchen.

Instant cameras are all the rage right now and the Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 is the best and most convenient out there at $59.95. It has all of the great features of the Mini 8 plus the added bonus of a selfie mirror and fun new colors. Whether you go with Flamingo Pink, Ice Blue, Lime Green, Cobalt Blue, or Smokey White you are going to hit big with this popular gadget gift that's almost like an instant Instagram camera.

It can monitor weight, body fat, water percentage, and even muscle and bone mass. It automatically syncs to an app so you can track your weight loss over time, and it helps you set a calorie budget to reach your weight goals. This high-tech scale can even give you the daily weather forecast.

The Oral B Pro 5000 is the Bluetooth, app-connected toothbrush that lets you properly manage your mouth in between dentist visits. This electric toothbrush tracks your brushing habits right on your phone while also giving you oral care tips and the weather. Maybe the best part is the pressure sensor that tells you when you’re pressing too hard against your enamel. It can be the tooth saver your life has been missing.

The Amazon Fire TV Stick now comes in 4K, allowing you to put Amazon Video tv shows and movies as well as thousands of apps on your big-screen TV with the added benefit of the maximum available resolution. That means Amazon and Netflix video in Ultra HD and HDR, and the bonus here is that the remote lets Alexa find programs for you to watch, all with the direction of your voice.

You (or someone you’re gifting to) is probably going to spend money on an iTunes in 2018. Music, movies, apps, games and books cost money, and there’s nothing better than remembering you have a gift card balance attached to your Apple account. Sometimes, you can even get iTunes Gift cards at a discount, letting you spend less and give more. How many times does that happen during the holidays?

This is the lightsaber of Amazon Prime members everywhere. It scans barcodes to reorder products around your kitchen and house, and queues them up in your Amazon basket. You can also tell the built-in Alexa system what you want or ask it questions. It’s one of the cheapest ways to get Alexa in your hand, and Amazon currently has a promotion essentially making it free.

The tech that will power the 22nd century

Where and when to see a rocket launch (and maybe a landing too)

With SpaceX now launching payloads every two weeks, and Nasa ramping up its operations, there are multiple ways to witness the ultimate in tech spectacles: a rocket launch. Florida, Virginia and California all host increasingly regular rocket launches, and it's also possible to reliably witness a launch from China, French Guiana and Kazakhstan.

There's one undisputed hot ticket in rocket launches: witnessing a take-off of the reusable SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, the first stage of which then returns to Earth and lands, either on lands or on a drone ship. However, if you want to see the biggest and the best, there's only one place to go: Baikonur in Kazakhstan, to see a manned rocket launch to the International Space Station (ISS) – see the next slide.

You'll find a good overview of what's coming up and where at Nasa's website. Just bear in mind that launches are often postponed – but when they happen they're worth waiting for.

  • Empty list

Nasa and SpaceX can pretend all they want, but witnessing a manned launch to the International Space Station is surely the ultimate adrenalin rush for any space fan – and that only currently happens in one rather remote location. The Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan is home to the world's most reliable rocket, the Russian Soyuz-FG, which launches about four times a year to transport two or three cosmonauts and astronauts to the ISS.

Witnessing a manned ISS launch from Baikonur is perfectly possible, but costs a lot – bank on at least €3,750 (around $4,500 / £3,300 / AU$5,800) per person for the four-day tour from Moscow, which includes flights from Moscow, a hotel for three nights, and tours of the Cosmodrome Museum. You can save a bit by choosing to see the launch of an unmanned Progress cargo spaceship bound for the ISS, which costs around half as much.

The next manned mission to the ISS is due to take place on December 27, with approximate dates for 2018 currently listed as March 10, April 25, September 8 and November 7.

Flat, flooded and crawling with crocodiles, Cape Canaveral – aka the Space Coast, and where all Apollo missions to the Moon launched from – is the easiest place in the world to reliably witness a rocket launch.

There are two major locations on Florida's 'Space Coast'; Nasa's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and, just next door, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS). Although SpaceX sometimes lands its reusable Falcon 9 rocket on a drone-ship in the Atlantic Ocean, it often launches them from KSC and lands them at CCAFS.

For SpaceX launches going from KSC's Launch Complex 39A, and for Nasa's missions upon United Launch Alliance's (ULA) Atlas V and Delta 4 rocket lifting-off from nearby 39B, there are viewing locations in public areas.

Sometimes, in addition to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's $50/$40 (adults/children) daily admission fee you can get tickets to watch a launch from the LC-39 Observation Gantry ($49), Banana Creek at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, right across the water from the launch pads ($20), or from Nasa Causeway ($40).

However, go anywhere on Cocoa Beach south of Cape Canaveral and you'll be able to witness any rocket launch – from a distance – for free. Ditto Playalinda Beach to the north, or near Titusville to the west. If you watch a SpaceX launch, expect sonic booms.

You'll find launch schedules at the Kennedy Space Center website and Space Coast Launches.

Thinks China's space programme is secretive? It used to be, but not any more. Constructed in the southeast of the holiday island of Hainan, Wenchang has drawn big crowds for its first three launches in 2016 and 2017, a Long March 5 and two Long March 7s.

Watching a launch from the area isn't technically difficult– it's about an hour's drive from the main city of Haikou on the coast. It's early days, and finding out the latest information about launches is tricky, but China's space program is burgeoning, and is intended to be a publicly accessible prestige project. Cape Canaveral definitely has a new rival.

Virginia's Eastern Shore is from where Orbital ATK sends its Antares rocket, carrying its Cygnus spacecraft packed with cargo, to the ISS. About four miles from the launch pads, the Nasa Visitor Center has a viewing area of benches in an open field (parking is first-come, first-served – it opens at 6am on the day of a launch).

Nasa's Wallops website advises arriving at least 30-60 minutes prior to a rocket launch window, and three or more hours prior to a large-scale mission launch window. Chincoteague Island is another place worth checking out, while the local tourism service has more information on where to watch.

You can also watch launches from Wallops at Nasa's Wallops UStream channel – here's the launch schedule.

Although Cape Canaveral gets all the attention, Vandenberg AFB in California is a hotbed of one of the space industry's most exciting sights – the launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 re-usable rocket.

There are several such launches planned in 2018 – including a quite a number for Iridium's NEXT satellite constellation – but Vandenberg also hosts launches of Atlas and Delta rockets.

There's a dedicated website with information on where to watch launches, and another listing launch schedules.

The French Overseas Territory of French Guiana in the northeast of South America may be the least visited destination on the continent, but where you launch a rocket from matters. A lot.

Kourou is near the equator at latitude 5° N, which makes it ideal for launching satellites into geostationary orbit. Since it's near the equator, which has a greater rotational speed, rockets get a boost – the slingshot effect. Basically, it can put a payload anywhere it wants, which is why, in spring 2019, the European Space Agency's (ESA) Centre Spatial Guyanais spaceport will host one of the most prestigious launches of all – the James Webb Space Telescope.

The $10 billion successor to the Hubble Space Telescope is due to launch on an Ariane-5 rocket from CSG, with the launch date having slipped from October 2018. Tickets for launches at CSG are free, and you can book viewing tickets for upcoming launches at its website.
